Cape Wind Associates announces it plans to base its wind farm operations on Falmouth Harbor, in another step toward building the more than $2.7 billion Cape Wind offshore wind project.

The development firm said it signed a purchase and sales agreement earlier this week for the East Marine boat yard, located on Falmouth Heights Road. The site will employ 50 permanent full-time operations workers.

The Cape Wind project, a 130-turbine wind farm slated for construction in Nantucket Sound, has yet to finalize its financing but has signed agreements with National Grid and Nstar for the purchase of a combined 77.5 percent of the project’s electricity.

The Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound appealed the Federal Aviation Administration’s approval of the project, Wednesday after the FAA issued permitting approval.

Existing operations at East Marine will continue unchanged for this winter’s boat storage season and for summer operations of 2013, according to Cape Wind. The firm plans to begin interior renovations of East Marine’s two buildings after that.
