S. Himmelstein and Company
S. Himmelstein and Company has been designing and manufacturing the world’s best torque measurement transducers, torque sensors, and instrumentation since 1960. Our products offer significant advantages over competitive models, enhancing their overall performance under real world conditions, not just in the calibration stand.
Highest Available Mechanical Overloads
Select from 200%, 400%, 500% and 1,000% overload models. The flexibility to select torque sensor mechanical overload allows optimal sizing of the sensor to suit the application, even in the presence of peak torques that exceed the average running torque.
High Electrical Overrange
All Himmelstein Torque Transducers and Instruments with high level dc analog output voltages, have significant electrical overrange (130% to 150% in most cases.). This means that the output signal does not clip at full scale. All rotating mechanical systems have oscillatory signals. When operating at or near full scale, insufficient overrange on the output signal will cause clipping of the peak values and result in incorrect display of the average torque. Himmelstein Torque Transducers will provide accurate measurement, even beyond full scale.
Best Dynamic Measurements
Our Bearingless Torque Flanges are the best choice for dynamic measurement and control. That’s because the world’s highest torsional stiffness yields wider installed bandwidth and faster installed response than any competitive device. They also feature industries highest overrange and greatest isolation from clamping and other extraneous loads. Those features reduce errors from clipped torque peaks and parasitic loads.
World Class Temperature Performance
Superior temperature compensation results in sensor temperature performance that greatly reduces errors caused by drive heating and thermal gradients. This level of temperature performance allows us to offer Dual Range Torque Transducers with high accuracy.
Broadest Available Range of ISO17025 Torque Calibration Services
Available calibration ranges from 10 ozf-in to 4,000,000 lbf-in (0.07 Nm to 452,000 Nm). Accreditation is through NVLAP, an arm of the United States NIST, lab code 200487-0. Nine calibration stands are available to provide optimal measurement uncertainty for the range of transducer being calibrated. Services are offered for torque transducers manufactured by Himmelstein as well as those of other manufacturers. ISO 17025 accredited NIST traceable calibration certificates are provided with each calibration.

Meggitt Sensing Systems
Modern energy-generation plants contain myriad rotating parts, ranging from vast turbine blades to tiny cooling fans. Because they are constantly in use, enclosed in protective casings and often operating in inhospitable temperatures, pressures and chemical mixes, it is difficult for engineers to check they are functioning correctly. This is where health monitoring comes in. Machinery protection, condition monitoring, industrial vibration monitoring and partial discharge monitoring are related services provided by Meggitt to enable operators to remotely monitor the health of their machines while they are in action.
Highly durable sensors placed close to critical pieces of equipment relay information on everything from vibration anomalies to electrical currents back to a central computer system. By inspecting patterns within the signals, analysts can easily see if their equipment is in fine fettle or in need of some attention. Because any potential problems show up early on, engineers can schedule physical inspections and repairs for optimal times, when energy demand is low. Most important, health monitoring avoids catastrophic failures, potentially saving billions of dollars.
In the wind industry, industrial vibration monitoring has proven to be so effective that many insurance providers won’t provide cover without it. When the first wind turbines were installed in Europe, their planetary-style gearboxes were prone to failure due to gear-oil overheating and mechanical wear caused by gusts of wind and misalignment. Turbines often caught fire, resulting in lengthy and costly downtime. Operators needed a way to monitor the health of their turbines and turned to vibration monitoring.
When properly positioned and monitored, vibration sensors effectively identify the changes in the mechanical performance of wind turbines that are the tell-tale signs of a developing fault. Correcting malfunctions at an early stage can save thousands of dollars in repair fees, as well as reducing costs from lost output. Today, Meggitt’s sensors and systems help monitor vibration on as many as 10,000 wind turbines.

M4 Wind Services, Inc.
M4 Wind Services, based Long Beach, CA is a complete maintenance, inspection and repair services company where “Engineering Meets the Field.” M4 started as a high technology engineering company in 2001, focused primarily on extremely challenging problems in the aerospace and defense industries. Many of M4’s most challenging projects were in the composite materials and structures area, so we quickly built a strong team of analysts, designers, and technicians that could quickly design, optimize, build, and repair composite structures. Our transition into the wind industry began in 2003, when our team started a production line for 30+ meter blades in California. Since then, we have designed and built blades as large as 70m for turbines in use worldwide. We have recently developed proprietary designs and patents for revolutionary wind turbine blades and are currently entering low rate production. Building on our in-factory expertise, M4 expanded into field inspection and repair of wind turbines; clocking over 200,000 hours over the last two years. Our quality control inspectors, field engineers and technicians have performed some of the most challenging repairs in the industry, and the fact that they access to our home office staff of excellent engineers gives our service teams significant advantages in diagnosing and correcting problems from the simplest to the most complex.
Since its inception, M4 Wind Services has expanded its portfolio of support activities to include complete tower maintenance and repairs, QC services for the complete life cycle of a WTG from component supplier audits through decommissioning, due diligence pre-warranty expiration inspections of the entire WTG, focused major component inspections of gearboxes and blades, complete blade servicing from washing to up-tower remediation and independent 3rd party fault analyses with root cause determinations and corrective action recommendations. Expanding support now includes active load and threat monitoring equipment (Rotor Redline) to extend the life of WTG’s and reduce maintenance costs as well as strategic partnerships to provide low-cost gearbox repair and overhaul services and long-term warranty repair services to stabilize maintenance costs for the WTG’s operational life.
