A History Rooted in Innovative Lifting Solutions
The Caldwell Company has its roots in the fertile mind of Leslie M. Caldwell, an inventor and tinkerer. The company was incorporated in 1954 by Mr. Caldwell, who designed, fabricated, and sold special lifting slings – one of which being the patented Adjust-A-Leg® load-leveling wire rope sling.
Mr. Caldwell purchased a used Singer 7-33 sewing machine, some MIL-spec webbing, and thread from Eastern Jobbers and started making nylon web slings in the basement of the building at 1224 4th Avenue, Rockford. Caldwell branded slings were then put on the market.
Jack W. Remington purchased the company in 1962; he brought with him 25 years of design, shop, sales, and business management experience. Mr. Remington gradually expanded the product line and his staff as the company slowly grew larger. By 1971, more space was required, which precipitated moving to a new, larger facility in Rockford’s Eastrock Industrial Park.
Howard A. Will, Jr., a Yale University graduate with a major in civil engineering, a master’s in civil engineering from Stanford University, and a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois, purchased The Caldwell Company at the end of 1976. Taking advantage of his engineering background, Will shifted the emphasis of the company to fabricated metal and Below-the-Hook lifters. He built up the engineering department and started a program to upgrade production facilities. Early on, a goal was established to offer the fullest range of Below-the-Hook lifting products from one source.
Today, the company had, through numerous acquisitions and internal development, has grown into many distinct product lines.
The company is also the master distributor in the U.S. and Canada for the RUD Lifting Points and Lifting Means. RUD lifting points support wind turbine manufacturers through the entire product lifecycle. In production, RUD lifting points help the turbines move through the facility, from fabrication and assembly to loading. Once the turbines are on site, the integrated lifting points assist with installation, while others serve as tie-off points for fall protection during maintenance. And when the turbine is decommissioned, the same lifting points allow for safe dismantling, transportation, and disposal.
In addition, Caldwell continues to lead the industry through the innovative development of its non-conductive and lightweight Dura-Lite® Lifting Beam line and modular Dura-Mod® Lifting
and Spreader Beam line.
RAD Torque and the Wind Energy Industry
When it comes to heavy-duty bolting, wind turbine manufacturers, wind power construction and maintenance contractors, as well as utilities around the world rely on RAD Torque Systems.
That’s because our wrenches are accurate, easy to use, lightweight, quick and quiet. At RAD, we understand that the wind energy industry faces unique challenges, so we design tools to make technicians’ jobs easier.
We work with manufacturers such as General Electric, Vestas, Siemens, Goldwin, and operators like Iberdrola, Nextera, and Morteson Construction, to meet torque needs at their facilities.
High torque at high heights
At RAD, we know that wind energy technicians require tools to get jobs done several hundred feet above the ground.
The E-RAD and B-RAD are extremely light in comparison to their hydraulic competitors and do not require a heavy pump. That means they are easier to transport up to and use on work platforms. But that doesn’t mean they compromise on torque strength.
It can take up to 120 bolts and up to 11,000 foot-pounds to connect a large diameter flange. The E-RAD is a continuous rotation tool and can complete a task like this in a much shorter time than a hydraulic wrench.
Unique tools for a unique workplace
In some wind turbine towers, technicians have to flange sections from the inside. Other turbines have unique curvatures that do not allow for the use of straight tools.
RAD’s offset gearboxes and 90 degree tools allow an E-RAD to fit inside the diameter and curvature of a turbine’s shell, which means no job is out of reach – even on more challenging turbine designs.
The RAD advantage
When it comes to bolting components for construction and maintenance of wind turbines, companies can rest assured that they have the best tools for the job. Our E-RAD, B-RAD, offset gearbox and smart sockets can be used to install and maintain tower bolts, blade bolts, shrink discs, gearboxes, generators, hub bolts, and yaw bolts.
Our Product Advantages
Planetary gear driven wrenches, as opposed to conventional torque tools, have the advantage of continuous rotation while applying controlled torque. This makes them much faster than conventional hydraulic wrenches and with their pistol grip they are safer and more ergonomic.
Our motor is built right in the handle, so no longer the hassle of bringing a heavy and expensive hydraulic pump to the jobsite.
The E-RAD BLU-S is the newest addition to the E-RAD BLU product line from RAD. Equipped with a transducer, the E-RAD BLU-S allows for the highest accuracy on the market and features operator identification, which ensures traceability of each torque sequence performed. With a pass/fail indicator on both sides, and password protection, you’ll be sure you’re getting controlled and accurate torquing.
The new B-RAD Select BL battery series torque wrenches come with two simple buttons to increase or decrease the value by 10 ft. lbs. At the four-digit display, the set torque value is displayed. The B-RAD Select BL
series automatically backs off when the torque cycle is complete, this allows for the end user to move quickly to the next bolt.
The B-RAD is especially suitable for pre-torque and service jobs where electricity or compressed air are not available.
Eden Equipment offers the highest quality, USA-manufactured, longest life filtration solutions across a wide breadth of categories and applications providing clean air, water and other liquids on a reliable, sustainable basis that is safe and profitable for our customers.

With the increasing demand for clean energy, the wind sector continues to grow; and so do the challenges associated with achieving lower levelized cost of energy (LCOE). Unplanned downtime and repairs can be the difference between a profitable or unprofitable wind farm. Wind farm owners and operators must find ways to operate smarter and maintain profitability by controlling their operating and maintenance costs. Condition monitoring systems (CMS) provide insights into early fault detection that enable issues to be addressed at the right time and for the lowest cost.
Bently Nevada’s CMS and System 1 Wind software reduce operations and maintenance
costs by proactively detecting impending drivetrain issues. From sensors and monitors to software and services, our comprehensive offering enables you to intelligently monitor wind farm assets, increase availability and decrease maintenance costs. Our condition monitoring solutions and services are integral components of a condition based maintenance (CBM) methodology and are applicable across all onshore, offshore, gearbox and direct-drive wind turbines.
Bently Nevada’s wind turbine condition monitoring experts understand wind turbine drivetrains and will provide insights to help you control your operating and maintenance budget. We’ll work with you to understand your instrumentation needs, configure and commission your systems and provide the monitoring services necessary to maximize the profitability of your wind turbines.
