Wind turbines bring economic benefits to rural communities—but their required FAA safety lights create a trade-off: nighttime visibility that changes the rural landscape residents cherish.

Apex is solving this with Aircraft Detection Lighting Systems (ADLS), technology that uses radar to activate warning lights only when aircraft approach. A 98% reduction in light pollution means turbines remain virtually invisible most nights while maintaining aviation safety.

For Associate General Counsel J. Hess and his wife, Alex, what began as a shared mission to give back to their community has grown into the Labyrinth Training Center: a nonprofit in Goochland County, Virginia, that helps kids build confidence, connection, and trust by teaching them how to connect with rescued horses.

Labyrinth is a place where people, animals, and the land all get the care they need to thrive. And for J., it’s a living example of how the same mindset he brings to Apex—removing obstacles so others can do great work—carries through every part of his life.

Timbermill Wind: Impact By the Numbers

Extreme weather events like Winter Storm Uri have highlighted the need to update aging infrastructure across the United States. Since 2021, when record-low temperatures caused outages that left millions without power, energy storage has grown to play a role in helping stabilize the electrical grid and prevent further blackouts.

These battery systems store excess power during times of high production and then offload it when demand is higher—helping reduce transmission congestion, enhance grid reliability, and decrease costs for power buyers and consumers.
