Extreme weather events like Winter Storm Uri have highlighted the need to update aging infrastructure across the United States. Since 2021, when record-low temperatures caused outages that left millions without power, energy storage has grown to play a role in helping stabilize the electrical grid and prevent further blackouts.

These battery systems store excess power during times of high production and then offload it when demand is higher—helping reduce transmission congestion, enhance grid reliability, and decrease costs for power buyers and consumers.

Unlocking America’s Energy Potential

More and more communities are recognizing: clean energy is an opportunity to create long-term economic growth.

The benefits of wind and solar go beyond payments to landowners and tax revenue for schools and emergency services—these projects bring business activity to local areas, supporting everything from restaurants to young workers looking to begin their careers. In Tom Green County in West Texas, an area historically known for fossil fuel generation, renewable energy is a chance to diversify the county’s tax base while taking advantage of the Lone Star State’s excellent wind and solar resources.

Angelo Solar is doing just that: from the positive impacts of construction workers staying in hotels and eating in local restaurants to the jobs created for people who grew up in the area, the energy transition is providing a boost for San Angelo and Tom Green County to be felt for decades to come.

Harnessing the Sun in San Angelo, Texas

At every level of the organization, sustainability drives the Apex team.

This commitment has led to a first-of-its-kind initiative for the entire clean energy industry: the Apex Conservation Grant (ACG) Program. The program offers the opportunity to extend the positive environmental impact of the energy transition by committing grant funds from Apex’s newly commissioned wind and solar facilities to support efforts that directly benefit the natural areas surrounding project communities.

Thanks to funds provided by the ACG Program, Ducks Unlimited is working to restore more than 330 acres of habitat at the Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge, 9,225 acres of riverine and floodplain habitats that lie at the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. When the project is complete, hundreds of acres of former agricultural land will be restored to a healthy wetland forest environment, using wells and pumps to mimic the floodplain that once naturally existed.

A Path to Sustainable Impact

Solar power is a crucial and growing part of our nation’s energy mix, both for its ability to generate sustainable, carbon-free energy and for the economic impact it creates during its construction.

In the case of one solar farm in West Texas, a crew of hundreds of onsite workers operated as a well-oiled unit to bring the project to life. The team installed upward of 500 panels a day to build this 195 MW facility, which will deliver enough energy annually to power the equivalent of 50,000 American homes. Watch to see a solar farm take shape—from the first support pile to the final product.

The Energy Transition in Action: Constructing a Solar Farm

Schleicher County, Texas—a ranching community with a population of just 2,400—was long dominated by oil and gas, but for the most part, active oil rigs and tanker trucks are a rare sight these days.

It’s easy to see the changes that have taken place: the charming downtown has a lot of vacancies, and options are limited for grabbing a bite. But an abundance of local pride is on display, with freshly maintained landscaping on the main drag and a local paper whose editor stubbornly and often singlehandedly defies the fate that’s befallen many small-town newsrooms across the country.

And, just down the road, Apex is developing a new kind of energy project—a green hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and export hub. Within that hub are multiple production sites, including Big Trail, each comprising wind, solar, and battery storage facilities, to be co-located with electrolyzers that will transform electricity into green fuels.

Of course, developing something of this magnitude is no easy feat. Like all of Apex’s projects, Big Trail will succeed because of the local relationships built and the mutual interest the company shares with communities in projects that improve the lives of the people who live near them. The jobs, local tax dollars, and possibilities presented by a project the size of Big Trail could transform Schleicher County.

Transforming Texas with New Energy Opportunities

Accelerating the shift to clean energy will not start and end with today’s workforce—it is a multi-generational effort. To inspire the workforce of tomorrow, Apex has spearheaded a new educational initiative: the Apex Academy.

An immersive weeklong workshop, Apex Academy introduces high school students to engineering concepts and career opportunities within the industry. In addition to introducing wind engineering concepts to this year’s cohort, the program focused on fostering an inclusive environment and showing how the energy transition is a massive undertaking that unites professionals of varied education, backgrounds, and interests.

Activities ranged from mapmaking and creating and calibrating a cup anemometer to designing and optimizing their own wind farm using state-of-the-art software. The open-ended structure of the week enriched students’ understanding of real engineering concepts—creating a memorable, meaningful learning process. The energy transition holds immense promise—and Apex will be there to catalyze the personal and professional growth of the next generation of industry leaders.
